Let Us Hip-Hop Back in Time

Hip-Hop became widely popular during the 1970s and since then has expanded and evolved to become an easily recognisable dance style. Unlike ballet, hip-hop was more of a bubble-up process, as street dancers were formed in urban neighbourhoods in social atmospheres. Nowadays, however, hip-hop is taught internationally in dance classes and workshops, however it still holds onto the self-taught looseness and style.

The classic hip-hop costume consisted of baggy trousers, similar in style to the Harem pant, trainers and  the use of bright colours.

During the 1990s this hip-hop fashion, derived from the hip-hop dance crews and music from the 1970s, was made popular once again by the hit television show "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air". This television show featured typical hip-hop styles, worn by the young Will Smith and brought a return to this urban style.

The release of "Step Up" in 2006 brought back hip hop as a widely known popular fashion, introducing a more refined, modern alteration.

This more urban style has come back into fashion recently with sweatshirts and trainers creeping back into popularity. These styles have clear hip-hip origins, but have been altered and modified over the years to create an arguably more laid back and subtle hip-hop style, which will continue to smash the fashion scene in years to come.
